The Lithuanian Center for Agricultural and Forestry Sciences is a state research institute. The strategic goal of the center is to carry out scientific research and experimental development in the fields of agronomy and forestry in the field of agricultural sciences, as well as the related ecology and environmental studies, biology, biophysics, botany, and zoology. In the center and its departments in 2022 at the end of the year, there were 476 employees, including 166 researchers, and 68 doctoral students. The center conducts research and implements various scientific programs and projects. Scientists participate in national (financed by the Lithuanian Science Council, the Ministries of Agriculture, Environment, Economy, etc.) and international projects financed by HORIZON EUROPE, HORIZON 2020, European Territorial Cooperation, and other EU programs. Breeding programs for the main field, garden, pome fruit, stone fruit and berry plants are being carried out. The created plant varieties are entered into the National List of Plant Varieties and the EU General Catalog of Varieties of Agricultural Plant and Vegetable Species. Since the beginning of plant breeding in Lithuania (1922), more than 490 varieties of field, garden and vegetable plants have been created in all branches of the Center. Many of them are successfully grown in Lithuania, neighboring and other countries.
