HOW TO BEHAVE DURING A REMOTE JOB INTERVIEW?

Preparing for a Job Interview
Job searching doesn’t end with browsing job portals and applying for positions. Often, you also need to prepare for interviews, which nowadays (especially during and after quarantine) frequently take place remotely. This method has both advantages and disadvantages. Below are 11 tips to help you succeed in a remote job interview:
1. Confirm your attendance
When you receive an interview invitation, thank the recruiter and confirm your participation. It only takes a minute but leaves a positive impression of politeness and responsibility.
2. Test your equipment
Even if you trust your computer, check the internet connection, camera, and microphone. Test the sound quality. If it’s your first time using the video call platform, make a trial call in advance.
3. Create a professional environment
Choose a neutral background and good lighting (preferably near a window). Make sure you are the main focus on the screen. Eliminate distractions such as noises or flashing lights. Keep your surroundings tidy.
4. Be virtually professional
Check the name and email linked to your video platform – always use your real name. Ensure your profile photo looks professional.
5. Prepare thoroughly
A remote interview should be treated the same as an in-person one. Don’t “Google” answers during the conversation. Instead, prepare responses to common questions:
- What interested you in this position?
- What do you know about the company?
- What are your biggest weaknesses?
- What is your greatest professional achievement?
- What challenges have you faced in your previous job and how did you handle them?
- What are you looking for in a new role?
- Why are you leaving your current job?
Research the company and its culture, and prepare questions to ask the interviewer.
6. Learn basic body language skills
This will help you present yourself more confidently and understand the interviewer better. Plenty of free resources are available online.
7. Avoid interrupting
This can be harder in virtual settings since body language cues are less obvious. Use longer pauses between your sentences to give the other person room to speak.
8. Dress professionally
Even if you’re at home, dress as if you were attending an in-person interview. Professional attire shows respect and creates the right mindset.
9. Be yourself
Don’t be afraid to smile, joke lightly, or admit if you don’t know something. Authenticity makes you relatable – remember, there’s a human being on the other side of the screen.
10. Send a thank-you note
After the interview, send a thank-you email. If another interview is scheduled, confirm whether you’ll be attending.
11. Maintain eye contact by looking into the camera
Resist the urge to look at yourself. Looking directly into the camera shows genuine interest and respect toward the interviewer.
We hope these tips help you land your dream job!
