After the restoration of independence, the university has to constantly maneuver between global competition and local state needs, at the same time choosing between the roles of technocratic market needs-satisfier and classical human educator. The strength of the modern Vilnius University, the aspiration to become an academic graphene, is measured not only by its historical mission, but also by various formal evaluations. However, it is precisely this that symbolizes the two most important threads of Vilnius University's identity today, twisted as if in a DNA spiral - its passionate efforts to adapt to the needs and fashions of a fiercely changing world, and at the same time the tradition that has survived since its establishment. The first thread is the 17th century. representatives of technical and life sciences who replaced logicians (or grew out of them?). The second is the same ones from the 17th century. poets, even if in (post)modern times they are more often called humanitarians. So while the university enjoys the rewards of DNA research, the DNA of the university itself has not changed since its founding.
